Rebecca WeeksMarine Conservation BiologistFiji | Philippines | AustraliaMy research explores how systematic conservation planning concepts and tools can be applied to develop marine protected area (MPA) networks in data-poor, developing country contexts. A secondary theme of my work is the importance of spatial scale in conservation planning; in particular the need to reconcile regional-sale planning with local-scale implementation in order to develop ecologically functional and connected MPA networks that are supported by local resource users.Research
My primary research focus with the Wildlife Conservation Society in Fiji is working with coastal communities in three qoliqolis (traditional fishing grounds) to design conservation strategies that incorporate resilience to climate change. With the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, in collaboration with the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation, I am leading a project that aims to develop an MPA Network Management Plan for the Province of Siquijor. This project will improve the scientific basis for conservation decision-making in the region, and aims to consolidate existing conservation efforts by scaling up towards an ecologically and socioeconomically functional MPA network.Experience

Proficient in ERSI ArcGIS, Microsoft Access and Office, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator software packages and the ‘R’ statistics package.
Experience with Maxent species distribution modelling software.Fieldwork:SCUBA qualifications: GUE Fundamentals, SSI & PADI Rescue Diver, BSAC Sports Diver.
400+ hours research diving experience in Fiji, Philippines, Australia, Madagascar, Seychelles, and the UK.
Scientific Diver qualification from James Cook University.
DAN Oxygen Provider and Senior First Aid with CPR.
Queensland recreational boat license.
Full UK and International driving license.Communication:Completed a ‘Communicating Science to the Public’ workshop, February 2006.
Presented to a wide variety of audiences, including: coastal communities, resource users, school groups, undergraduate and masters students and at national and international conferences.
